The protocol now positions itself as "Ethereum-aligned premier infrastructure and yield," stitching together liquid restaking, a preconfirmation network, and based rollups into a single integrated stack aimed at the fragmentation that has long complicated the network's scaling logic.
An architecture of alignment
The stack's center of gravity is pufETH, Puffer's liquid restaking token, which serves not merely as a yield instrument but as a decentralized economic base. Around it, Puffer Preconf offers sub-100-millisecond execution guarantees through a preconfirmation network, while the UniFi stack provides based sequencing and dedicated appchain blockspace. The connective tissue, as Puffer frames it, is a feedback loop: capital secures execution, and the fees generated by that execution reinforce the base layer's economic security.
For participants already active in the restaking space, the architecture reframes what validator dynamics actually entail. Instead of staking ETH to secure a single consensus boundary, depositors are underwriting a chain of guarantees — slashing conditions propagated across AVS relationships, preconfirmation attestations, and rollup settlement. The exposure migrates from one-dimensional validator yield toward multi-layered infrastructure risk, a distinction that rarely surfaces in headline APY comparisons.
Institutional gravity and the liquidity question
The thesis arrives alongside a quieter but structurally significant move: Puffer's March 2026 integration with Anchorage Digital brought pufETH into federally regulated custody, opening a compliant on-ramp for institutional capital. That pairing matters because it pulls the restaking primitive into the same distribution rails that have historically absorbed staking flows at scale, and it repositions the protocol away from points-driven retail incentives toward durable capital alignment.
Whether the model can absorb that capital without re-introducing liquidity fragmentation remains the open question.
