How Aqua is meant to work
The core mechanic, as described by 1inch co-founder Sergej Kunz, is that your tokens stay in your self-custodied wallet rather than being deposited into a string of separate pools. A single balance can back several positions at once. To illustrate the point, the team points to a wallet holding $100,000 that can set up three positions with orders totaling as much as $300,000 — not as a leverage trick, but as a way of layering orders against the same underlying capital. A trade only fills if the wallet actually has the balance when execution hits.
That design choice — assets leave your wallet only at the moment of a fill — is the part most worth noting for anyone who cares about custody and counterparty exposure. You are not pre-funding multiple venues; you are letting a routing layer read your wallet state and act when a real opportunity appears, rather than parking idle balance in contracts you cannot easily unwind.
Chains currently supported include Ethereum, Base, BNB Chain, Arbitrum, and Robinhood Chain among the 13 listed. The breadth is part of the pitch: the same balance, multiple networks, one execution path in theory rather than a stack of fragmented positions to monitor.
The problem Aqua is trying to solve
1inch has framed the launch against a specific data point: in the first half of 2026, roughly 85% of the $1.84 billion supplied to major exchanges was not used efficiently. On average, around $542 million a week sat outside the executable trading range, which the team estimates translated to about $150 million in missed annual fee revenue.
If those numbers hold, the cost of fragmented liquidity is not abstract — it is the gap between capital deployed and capital actually earning. A shared liquidity layer, in that read, is less about novelty and more about reclaiming idle balance. For me as a passive income strategist, that framing lands close to how I already think about a sustainable baseline: the question is not the headline APY on a card, it is the share of capital that is genuinely working at any given moment.
To bootstrap the early period, the 1inch Foundation and its DAO are running a three-month rewards program totaling 100,000 1INCH and 500,000 USDC for participating liquidity providers. That is a real incentive on top of whatever fees flow through, but it is also finite — worth tracking, not worth folding into a long-term assumption.
What I would check before routing capital through it
Shared liquidity layers do not remove the underlying complexity of multi-chain DeFi; they reorganize it. The execution you get still depends on protocol design, route availability, and the actual chains you intend to touch. Before I treat Aqua as part of my own setup, a few things sit on my checklist:
- Whether the routing logic treats each supported chain as a genuine execution venue, or as a paper stop that looks fine until settlement matters.
- How the position-scaling claim — one balance, several open orders — behaves in thin markets, where a fill can move against you faster than the wallet state can be re-read.
- Whether the rewards program meaningfully shifts effective capital efficiency, or simply inflates a short-window APY that compresses once the pool empties.
- Reconciliation and reporting quality. Even when custody stays with you, you still need a clean record of what was filled, where, and at what price.
The honest read here is that Aqua is a sensible direction for the space, and the self-custody framing is a real improvement over deposit-everywhere models. A shared liquidity layer is a routing change, though, not a guarantee. The capital efficiency case only holds if execution matches the design under stress, not just in the quiet weeks. I would treat it as something to test with a slice of capital first, watch how routes behave across a full market cycle, and only then scale into the positions that fit a longer-term baseline.
