Ethena Integrates Equity Derivatives into USDe Yield Strategy
Ethena is rerouting the engine behind USDe, according to reporting from Bankless.

The protocol is layering equity perpetual futures into its basis trade while winding down its Hyperliquid-based markets — a structural pivot that reframes where the synthetic dollar sources its yield and how its underlying risk is composed.
From crypto-native basis to cross-asset sourcing
By introducing equity perps into the backing of USDe, Ethena widens the surface area from which its basis trade can be harvested. The mechanism is no longer bound exclusively to crypto funding rates; it now touches traditional equity derivatives as well. For capital allocators, this is a meaningful reconfiguration of the protocol's risk surface. Basis trade dynamics historically track funding-rate volatility, and equity-correlated instruments behave under entirely different liquidity and macro conditions.
The diversification of yield sources is meant to smooth the carry profile across regimes, but it also introduces new dependencies: equity perp depth, oracle reliability across asset classes, and the regulatory perimeter around synthetic exposure to stocks. These are not minor considerations — they are the structural seams through which peg stability can crack.
The HIP-3 unwind and Hyperliquid's gravity
Concurrently, Ethena is shutting its Hyperliquid-based markets. The timing is notable. Yellow.com's recent framing of Hyperliquid versus Binance describes an on-chain perps venue that scaled weekly volumes from roughly $13 billion late in 2024 to peaks near $47 billion by year-end, with open interest settling around $9.6 billion across more than 100 markets. That is not a venue capital abandons lightly.
The decision therefore reads less as a retreat and more as a refocusing. Capital alignment is being redirected toward the synthetic dollar engine rather than toward running competing order books on third-party perps infrastructure. Ethena appears to be conceding the venue game in order to concentrate on its own architectural layer.
What to track next
The open question is how ENA's tokenomics overhaul intersects with this expanded yield architecture. If equity perps deliver a steadier basis return, the dynamics governing USDe's peg stability may shift accordingly — and the slashing-equivalent failure modes compound with each new yield primitive introduced.
As DeFi yield vehicles increasingly blur the line between crypto-native and traditional finance infrastructure, secondary markets for adjacent asset classes — including the maturing landscape of digital collectibles venues — are quietly evolving in parallel. The structural question worth holding is whether Ethena's move sets a template: synthetic dollars drawing on a broader, multi-asset basis that pulls from equities, rates, and crypto simultaneously — or whether it remains an isolated experiment in capital alignment that the broader market cannot easily replicate.
